The basic initial quote we provide can be enhanced with the following options. Please consider these carefully as they add value and cover to your policy.
Policies can be extended to cover accidental damage or loss of items which you may take out of your home. This extension can cover such items as clothing, jewellery, cameras and sports equipment. You should enter the maximum value of items (individually worth less than £1000) that you are likely to have out of the home at any one time. This will set the cover at a level adequate to reimburse you for total loss of these.
You may have some items you want to cover outside the home which are worth more than £1000. For example, an expensive camcorder, watch or piece of jewellery. To arrange cover for these items you need to list them separately by clicking "Add Specified Items".
In addition to buildings insurance and contents insurance, most insurers offer accidental damage insurance for a small additional fee. If you're a little bit clumsy, have excitable children or simply have a lot of breakable and valuable stuff in your house, it can be well worth the money. Without this option selected, if you were to drop an expensive gadget down the stairs, spill paint on the carpet, put your foot through the ceiling etc... you would typically not be covered. Most Insurers include some garden cover within Buildings cover but you should select this option if you want the maximum protection for your lawns, trees, shrubs and garden ornaments.
The policyholder has to meet some of the cost of every claim and this is known as the "excess" (eg. the first £100 of each claim). For example, if you have a valid claim for damage to your home that will cost £500 to repair and your excess is £60, the insurance company will give you £540, which is the value of the claim minus the excess charge.
* Please note that damage to buildings caused by subsidence, heave and landslip is usually subject to a higher level of excess, typically around £1,000.
The policyholder has to meet some of the cost of every claim and this is known as the "excess" (eg. the first £100 of each claim). For example, if you have a valid claim for a TV set that will cost £500 to replace and your excess is £60, the insurance company will give you £540, which is the value of the claim minus the excess charge.
Don't forget to tell us how long you have been claim free. Likewise, always let us know if you have had to make a claim on any previous policy.
This option provides up to £75,000 of cover for legal expenses, such as:
- personal injury
- consumer disputes
- home rights
- employment disputes
